As public awareness of the potential risks associated with bioaerosols continues to grow, the Association for Organics Recycling, in conjunction with the Environment Agency organised a one day seminar about ‘Minimising, Monitoring and Assessing Bioaerosols’.  This event was targeted at biowaste and residual waste processors, regulators and those who monitor and assess bioaerosol emissions from biowaste management facilities.

The profile of bioaerosols, both from a public perception and at an occupational level has risen significantly.  This seminar informed delegates about the regulators' perspective, from science through to policy and effects on permit conditions.  This included the launch of the Association for Organics Recycling’s updated protocol for monitoring bioaerosols at open air windrow composting sites plus highlights from new guidance on site specific bioaerosol risk assessment for composting facilities.

Also outlined was the potential health risks associated with biowaste management facilities and implications for regulation, followed by practical guidance to operators on how to mitigate the risks to those who work on site and the wider community.

With impending changes associated with Environmental Permitting and emphasis on minimisation and control of emissions from biowaste management facilities, this event provided delegates with the most recent information available on this sensitive yet important topic.
